I read the Narnia series for the first time in 1975. It was wonderful then and continues to inspire. I have reread them many times, watched the BBC production of a few (many times) and now have seen the movie of the first book. Verdict: you just can't keep a good book down. The movie was good, not as good as the book, but good. I enjoyed it. Still, it was missing something.
I think one of the issues for me as a ten-times-or-more reader, is that I missed the contribution of the narrator that the book supplies. Some things need words. Pictures just do not tell the whole story. Words can be cumbersome at times. And it is sometimes hard work to get them to do what they are supposed to do. Nevertheless, they are the building blocks of thought and indispensible to the task of unpacking and understanding the world.
Go and see the movie. But go and read the books again. Neither will be a waste of your time.

I agree - the books are always better. And for that reason, I haven't been able to bring myself to watch the Tolkien movies - can you believe it?
Thinking about the question you posed yesterday - what do we need to do/know to be able to love others - I think that was how you put it. Someone answered "to know why God send Jesus" and you seemed happy with the answer. However, as I have pondered about it since then, I think that my answer would be a bit different.
I'm thinking that if we got a good look at who He really is, we would see, like Isaiah did, who we really are (unclean lips indeed!). Seeing who we are versus who He is should lead quite naturally into understanding our desperate and personal need for a Savior. The gratitude for having one provided should then develop a heart that longs to be like the Beloved.
What do you think? Am I off base?

No, I don't think you are off base at all. Seeing who God is, seeing it with a crystal clarity should always produce a "Moses made haste to bow low," kind of moment in our lives, which is exactly what Isaiah experienced. I think you are right on target.
But, the answer given in the service was also right on target to the specific question. "What is John's tactic to get us to love one another better? Ans. He points us to the sending of the son by the Father and the trifecta of purposes in 1 John 4 (life, atoning sacrifice [redemption], and savior).
