"Missions is not the ultimate goal of the church. Worship is. Missions exists becasue worship doesn't. Worship is ultimate, not missions, because God is ultimate, not man. When this age is over, and the countless millions of the redeemed fall on their faces before the throne of God, missions will be no more. It is a temporary necessity. But worship abides forever.
...
The goal of missions is the gladness of the peoples in the greatness of God."
(John Piper, Let the Nations Be Glad!)

Speaking of worship, thanks for asking us to stand for the reading of Scripture on Sunday.

We just read a book by Christopher Wright called "The Mission of God." It roots all Christian mission in God's mission to be known by the whole world, and it goes back to Gen 12:3 as the jumping off point. The reason I mention it is that at one point he quotes this statement from Piper (favorably). It was a good book, and I'd recommend it. The section on idolatry is worth the price of the book alone.
